How Does Acupuncture Work?

If you ask someone familiar to Oriental medicine and acupuncture they will tell you that there is a fundamental life force in every one of us.  This life force is called our Qi (pronounced chee).  Our Qi is capable of flowing through our entire body and nourishes our organs, senses, mind and everything in between.  The key to keep our bodies and Qi in balance so that symptoms do not begin.

Some people (acupuncturists included) like to say that the Qi is our energy.  I disagree.  I find that it is more than just "energy."  The Chinese character for Qi is a picture of a pot of rice cooking with the lid bouncing on the pot.  I can see where people would think of it as energy but I don't buy it.  Many people think of heat as energy, and thus this picture would show that energy is being created from the heat.  I think there is a life force that is making the lid bounce, not just "energy."

The Qi flows through the body in what is called a meridian.  These meridians are like rivers flowing throughout the entire body.  On the meridian are specific points that the Qi can be accessed by acupuncture needles, moxa, pressure, cupping or gua sha.  It is when the Qi becomes stuck or has some other issue that our symptoms arise.  By addressing the imbalances in the body our symptoms usually go away.
