Acupuncture for Insomnia
I rarely see a patient who says their sleep is perfect. If you are like many Americans (myself included) who have trouble sleeping, you'll be happy to know that acupuncture works very well for insomnia. Our fast paced society tends to make our brains work hard all day and for some people it becomes hard to turn the brain off at night. I also work with people who are just physically restless at night. This also usually comes from being active all day and finding it hard to shift over to stillness at night.
The two main types of insomnia I see are being unable to fall asleep when you go to bed, and the other is waking up in the middle of the night and having difficulty falling back to sleep. These are two different things in Oriental medicine. The heart Qi is more to blame for not being able to fall asleep when you go to bed, and the liver Qi is to blame when you wake up in the middle of the night and can fall back to sleep. Either of these two types of insomnia are very frustrating and can lead to other symptoms if they aren't addressed.
There are great alternative therapies for people who suffer with insomnia. Obviously, acupuncture works great! But some others are:
- Chamomile Tea or some other equivalent
- Or gentle stretching when you can fall back to sleep in the middle of the night
- 5HTP (is a precursor to serotonin)
Lifestyle factors also play into our insomnia. If you have any trouble with insomnia, I highly recommend that you stop using the following products:
