Acupuncture for PMS

I think for my acupuncture practice the main reason I see most women if for some sort of menstrual issue.  I have worked with hundreds of women for PMS symptoms (cramping, irritability, excessive worrying or crying, breast tenderness etc...), fertility, or painful periods/endometriosis/amenorrhea/dysmenorrhea.  I have had great success with treating all of these situations.  Usually the younger the woman the faster their body will come back into balance and the symptoms will decrease.  Woman in their late 20s and 30s and 40s will usually take a little longer to treat, so please be patient.  It can take a cycle or two for the energy to become regulated.

In Oriental medicine it is usually an imbalance in the liver energy (liver stagnation or blood stagnation) that causes most menstrual issues.  Many different things can cause these types of imbalances in the body:

  • stress
  • overwork
  • over exercising
  • emotional, physical or sexual abuse
  • diet (blood deficiency can lead to cramps before the period begins)
  • suppression of anger or frustration
  • a general feeling of "stuckness" in one's life

I like to get all the details of the menstrual cycle for each woman and find out what exactly is causing these symptoms to happen.  Usually when there is cramping before the period it is a sign that there isn't enough blood in the body.  Many vegetarians tend to suffer from this imbalance in the liver energetic system.  When there is cramping during the period it means the blood is getting stuck in the body.  Treating women's menstrual and fertility issues is very complex.  As you can see, even something as simple as cramps can be more than one thing.

Lifestyle changes that can help with menstrual issues:

  • Avoid coffee- the oil on coffee beans can irritate the liver and can lead to blood stagnation over time.  Switch over to green or black tea so that you can still have your caffeine
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Try to eat whole foods, nothing refined or processed, and organic when possible.
  • Avoid sugar
  • Take a fish oil supplement
  • Get at least 20-30 minutes of exercise every day, even just a walk around the block is better than nothing
  • Take some vitamin supplements: B6, Calcium, E, Magnesium, as well as a few others can help also
  • Get weekly acupuncture for your PMS symptoms!

In some cases I also recommend Chinese herbal therapy.  I may refer you to an herbalist for that part of your treatment.

During your acupuncture treatment at Element Acupuncture in Boston we will sit down and discuss all these options with you.  We take the time to make sure we know all about your concerns and we come up with a treatment plan that is realistic and effective.
